You may edit and customize these layouts, but despite what is done my credit link cannot be removed.
There are readme.txt files within these packages which will provide you with all the information you need to get them up and running.
A lot of the time when I am told "these don't work", the user has forgotten to change the style.css URL to point to the correct place
