In this tutorial I will take you on a step by step guide to creating tape brushes. Many people think that the only way to make high quality tape brushes is by scanning, but it can be even easier than that.

First, create a new blank image. My image is sized 219 x 74, but yours can be any side. After, take the shapes tool () and match your settings to mine below:
Shape: Rectangle
Colour: Black
Line Width: 0.00
Create as Vector and Anti Alias ticked

Draw out a basic rectangle, make the width and height whatever you feel.

Now, right click the Vector Layer you've just created and simply convert it into a raster layer. Then select the deform tool () and change it's setting to shear. Use this to pull the sides of the rectangle. To do this, all you do is put your mouse over the top or bottom corner and pull - repeat this on both sides.

This next step is optional, it just depends on how you want your tape brush. Take the Freehand Selection Tool () and match your settings to mine below
Selection Type: Smart Edge
Mode: Replace
Anti-Alias: Ticked
I'm starting on the left, and all I'm doing is highlighting the left side to make it looked like it's ripped. You may have to move your brush to the side at times, but the Selection Type will do most of it for you.

Press delete and you should get a nice choppy side.

Almost done! Go to Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow and match your settings to mine below:
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 1
Opacity: 33
Blur: 4.33

Set the raster layer to Normal at 32% and then merge all of your layers together.

The last thing we need to make this tape brush realistic is a Grunge Texture. In this tutorial I'm going to use this Grunge Texture from Swim Chick (I cropped a section of it, there is a wide selection of them on her website). Paste it over your image as a new raster layer (CTRL + L) and set it to Overlay at 100%. You're done.
